SHOOBS

SHOOBS is a raucous coming-of-age story set at a banging South London house party in the early noughties. Lisa is taking advice on how to deal with her feelings for both Blazer and Jada but it is good advice? Written by Janet Etuk

SHOOBS is part of a new anthology of digital shorts from Open Sky entitled MicroPlays: Identity. Five writers were asked the question, “What makes us who we are?”

PRAISE FOR SHOOBS

  • “Shoobs kicks things off in South London, 2005, where Lisa finds herself torn between her crushes at a party while engaging in a conversation with her older self. The film cleverly captures the tension and chemistry between her and both potential partners, particularly through her dancing interactions.”

    VOICE MAG

  • “Shoobs on the surface is very British, funny and charming then when you dig a little, it’s also a surprising exploration of self-identity, sexuality and social conformity. Lisle Turner gives the film a grounded yet light feel, so it can move freely between comedy and drama. There’s an excellent cast at work, led superbly by Taneetrah Porter, who makes for a great duo with writer Janet Etuk. It’s cleverly deceptive, really embracing the classic noughties vibe of being a little cheesy and vapid but adding a lot of layers to it.” ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

    FILM CARNAGE

  • “Below the surface level of Shoobs is an exploration into sexuality and self-identity. Led brilliantly by Taneetrah Porter alongside Janet Etuk, the two provide a great duo relationship with emotion sensed beneath the comedy. Being cunning and secretive, Etuk comedically slides into a close personal story of acceptance and understanding. Shoobs is an exciting and colourful short film that allows you to question how much value speaking to your younger self may provide.”
