THE DISAPPEARING ACT

The Disappearing Act is a magical exploration of the question “if no-one sees me do I even exist?”

So asks former wild child, single mother and magician’s assistant Edie Rose. When she was young she yearned to be appreciated for her talent but received an entirely different kind of attention. Now she’s older no-ones even looking as she fades into personal and professional obscurity. But Edie refuses to go quietly. She uses dark magic to conjure up her wayward, younger self and wiser, older self. This time travelling trio put on the show of shows. A raucous show with no assistants, only magicians. A heart-breaking show about love, loss, tragedy and triumph. A dazzling show of sleight of hand, seance and fabulously female magic. Through arguments, laughter and tears the three Edies find the poignant answer to their question. Armed with the truth they finally master the grandest of life’s illusions: The Disappearing Act.

Three actors in their 20s, 40s and 60s play the same character simultaneously, cheerfully disregarding stereotypes about female performers. The show blends new writing, physical theatre, comedy, a vivid soundtrack and stage magic.

The narrative is based on interviews, with women performing at different stages of their career, about their experience of the public gaze, male or otherwise. The show was delivered by an all-female production team.

After a successful regional tour in the West Midlands at the end of 2019, the planned national tour was cancelled due to Covid.
