“QUOTE about what you love about the film and how it inspired the artwork.” — Ioana Curelea (she/her)
Created as part of Open Sky’s “ART not ADS” campaign, that commissions independent artists to create affordable, limited-edition, art collectibles inspired by films we distribute for free.
Picture/s of Ioana
Ioana (she/her), is a queer Eastern European set and costume designer based in London. She works across theatre and film, building visual worlds that are rooted in politics, psychology, and lived experience. Her work often circles themes like power, identity, displacement, and survival. She tends to gravitate toward projects that amplify marginalised voices and challenge conventional forms.
Description
The artwork from Ioana Curelea is a vivid collage bursting with shrimp, prawns, and sea creatures layered over the scientific text (Newspaper article?) featured in the film titled “Gender benders at the beach: Endocrine disruption in marine and estuarine organisms.” Combining humour, science, and social commentary, the piece reimagines nature’s fluidity and transformation through a riot of colour and texture. AWAITING EDITS AND SIGN OFF FROM IOANA
Alt text for screen readers: The artwork is a dense, colourful collage featuring dozens of shrimp, prawns, and crustaceans cut from various printed sources. They overlap in a lively tangle across a sepia-toned background of an old newspaper article, where the visible heading reads “Gender benders at the beach: Endocrine disruption in marine and estuarine organisms.” The creatures range in size and hue — scarlet, pink, gold, green, and iridescent blue — creating a shimmering, chaotic underwater swarm. The combination of vintage text and vibrant sea life gives the image a playful yet thought-provoking tone, evoking ideas of change, biology, and gender fluidity.
